Holiday Gift Ideas for Beginning Fermenters
Shopping for someone who is just starting out or has shown interest in making their own sauerkraut, kombucha or beer? These gifts are perfect for getting them on their way to fermentation domination!
Kombucha Brewing Kit from The Kombucha Shop
This kit comes with everything they need to make their own kombucha at home, including a SCOBY! The step-by-step guide will ensure their first brew comes out great. Plus, customers rave that their custom blend tea makes the best kombucha ever! Fun fact, this company is based in our hometown of Madison, Wisconsin!
The Easy Fermenter
These lids are great for making sauerkraut or other veggie ferments in jars. The Easy Fermenter tags itself as the set it and forget it way to ferment and they’re right! They fit on any wide mouth ball jar and provide you with an airlock. This ensures no oxygen can enter but lets the carbon escape, preventing mold and eliminating the need to burp your jars. My favorite part about these lids is the easy release tab as it prevents one of my biggest sauerkraut pet peeves: not being able to open the darn jar! Plus, it comes with a date setter so they’ll never forget when they started their ferment.
Wild Fermentation by Sandor Katz
This is the book that started it all for us. Wild Fermentation presents the world of fermentation in an accessible and completely understandable way. Sandor Katz is a self-taught fermenter who has been at it for decades. This book leaves the reader ready and excited to get their first batch of sauerkraut going (among other things). This is actually the 2nd edition and it was just released in August, so chances are good your gift receiver doesn’t own it yet!
Feed Your Gut Hand Stamped Spoon
Let’s be honest, food tastes better when you use a fun spoon! Plus, it will look super cute when they post their latest ferment on Instagram! We love the message!
Holiday Gift Ideas for Intermediate or Advanced Fermenters
Are you shopping for someone who has been doing this for awhile? Maybe this person has shared their bubbly eats or tasty brews with you and you want to encourage them to make more? 😉 These tools will help them streamline their fermentation processes and expand their knowledge.
Fermenting Crock from Mark Campbell Ceramics
These hand thrown ceramic crocks are made to order and insanely beautiful. Bonus, they come with weights to keep those ferments submerged and happy. Mark makes these to order in his studio in California and is happy to customize them. We’ve got our eye on the ‘Ocean Greens’ color scheme. I think it would make quite the addition to our kitchen! Mark makes kombucha crocks, oil bottles and a variety of other pottery as well.
The Everyday Fermentation Handbook by Branden Byers
Branden is host of the FermUp Podcast and released his first book in 2014. While this book is great for beginners, I think intermediate level fermenters will love the effort he puts into his developing his unique recipes. They’re just plain cool. All types of fermented food and drinks are covered in this book from sourdough to kimchi and even feta cheese! With recipes like sourdough waffles and sauerkraut cream cookies, this book will keep your fermenter happy (and busy)!
Pickle Pebbles Glass Weights
Pickle Pebbles are glass weights for fermenting in jars. These weights ensure your veggies always stay under the brine, which eliminates the chance for mold due to exposure to oxygen. They work with mason jars and fido jars, so chances are the gift receiver will be able to use them right away. Plus, they come in a pretty gift box. You almost don’t even need to wrap them! And yes, they are certified lead-free.
Thank God It’s Fermented T-Shirt!
Yes, they definitely need this. Everyone that drinks ferments (like wine!) needs this.
We hope you’ve found just what you were looking for in our 2016 holiday gift guide for fermenters. Know someone else who might be shopping for a home fermenter? We’d love it if you would share our guide with them. Happy Holidays from our kitchen to yours!
